Philippine Chanted Prayers and Intimations
Voice, Silence, Intention, Surrender
Intoning the Spirit Within
____________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _
In many different spiritual traditions including my own as a Filipino
descended from ancestors indigenous to the Philippine archipelago,
chant, movement, and other creative expressions are valid forms of
intimation, prayer, and devotion. These are ways to connect with the
divine; to enter sacred time and space; to be in the presence of the
Holy Spirit.
At a time when wars continue to be waged between peoples in the name
of religion; when the pursuit of material progress overshadows the
pursuit of spiritual power; when disasters arising from human greed
and ignorance threaten to destroy humanity and earth itself, we are
reminded to take a step back, to take a deep breath, to reflect upon
our lives, to reconnect and seek guidance from the divine in each of
us in every culture, in every language, in every voice.
For many years now, I have been drawn to the study of chanted prayers
from elders in many different parts of the Philippines. More than the
search for intellectual understanding of my heritage as a Filipino, I
see it as signifying a point in my journey as artist, where there is
nothing more meaningful, nothing more satisfying, than to use my voice
to allow me, and hopefully those around me, to enter such state of
connectedness, humility, and grace.
To all of us who share in the experience, may the blessings be!
