The talented cast includes Alex Goldberg as Judas who said, "I'm
thrilled to be portraying the toughest and most rewarding character I
have ever encountered."  Musical theater rising star Jessica Goldberg
(not related to Alex) sends chills with her voice and version of
"Bless the Lord."  Cast members also include yoga teacher and singer
Kristina "Yogafly" Lanuza - writer of press releases who supplements
her existence through prayer and thinks it is "God's divine will that
I should rock out to 'Day by Day in this production.'"  Elisa Weiss'
wry sense of humor and alto voce combine to sing a very playful "Learn
Your Lessons Well."  Michael Hull leads everyone in his rollicking
rendition of "We Beseech Thee."  Alexandra Lombardi not only sings "By
My Side" but is the choreographer for the show.  And this would not be a musical without the musical direction of a certain musical virtuoso Marc Beja.

Artist Jordan Eagles' luscious cross adds fire to the GODSPELL set in DUMBO's Retreat.  Eagles work is a deeply mesmerizing exploration of the soul and its relation to the physical body.  He incorporates blood in his work, as a means to explore the mystery of this relationship.  In his Web site, he says, "By combining and preserving blood...I celebrate the rebirth process I believe the body-spirit undergoes when life, as we know it, has ended." (http://www.jordaneagles.com)  This massive cross was made specifically for the show and is comprised of four panels that explode in rich, passionate reds, blues and coppers from a bright and vibrant
focal point.  To support this and other John Syras Productions, the cross is also for sale.  Please e-mail johnsyrasproductions@yahoo.com with any inquiries.

Honesty Abounds from Valerie Curry

One of my best friends from time immemorial - 6th grade!!!! - Valerie Curry - sent me her 2 year old son - Jack's observations at Kroger's:

Today's grocery store observations:

Mommy, that man have no hair? Mommy, where is that man's hair?
Picture  it said loudly and repeatedly across the store as he points to be
sure  I know which man he's talking about.

Mommy, that lady is big.  Her, she big. Again, over and over because
he thinks I'm not paying attention.  He actually meant tall because
she was a very tall but no woman wants to be called big.  She was
about 2 feet away from us so she clearly heard the whole conversation.
And finally, my favorite...

I was across the aisle from him grabbing our weekly staple spaghetti-o's
when he says "poop."  Poo poo is his current favorite word but he only
uses poop when he's actually done the deed. So, I asked if he'd pooped. He said...
"No, mommy, somebody farted. I smell it.  It was the baby, maybe?"
Whoever did it must have been in earshot so hopefully, they will
think twice about farting in the face of an innocent and very vocal two
year  old.

None of these tops his comment months ago...
He held out his arms, straining to get out of the basket and yelled
over and over across the entire back end of Kroger...

"Daddy, hold me" to some LARGE, bewildered man.

That one had me cracking up for days.

Virasana

The Hero's Pose

I love to sit in meditation in Virasana - the Hero's pose.  The asana relieves discomfort in the lower back and aligns the hips and pelvis.  It's definitely a more advanced pose for meditation, so unless it is an easeful pose - and holds you up as you meditate, I suggest going for Sukhasana - easy-cross-legged pose when meditating.

How-to Virasana:

1) Kneel and place a blanket between your feet

2) Bifurcate your calves, using your thumbs as you move towards sitting

3) Sit on the blanket so that your legs fold at the knees and the tops of your feet are on the floor

4) Make sure the toenails fan the floor and are active.  Make sure that the feet do not "sickle" - or curve out so that the insides of the feet are on the floor.  The feet should be in the same line as the hips - straight back, with each toenail touching the floor.

5) Knees are a comfortable distance from each other

6) Sit with spine long and feel your heart center

7) Meditate on the breath and find the posture holding you as you absorb cosmic consciousness in meditation

The Remover of Obstacles

Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha

Om Gam Ganeshaya Namaha

Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha

Om Gam Ganeshaya Namaha

The elephant-headed diety that you see on the Home page of my Web site - http://www.yogafly.com - is Ganesha.  He is the child of Shiva and Parvati - the 2 realms of consciousness that represent creation and the act of creativity, respectively.  Ganesha has the head of an elephant and the body of a man.  He rides a little mouse.  I whisper into his great big elephant ear, the obstacles that I feel and think are on my path.  And he helps me by easing the stress.

Gurumayi suggested to John Friend (founder of Anusara yoga) - who passed it on to us - that perhaps one can't pray that obstacles be removed.  But one can ask Ganesha for the wisdom, the strength, the courage and the light to deal with the obstacles as they come.

Chant 108 times: Om Gam Ganeshaya Namaha

The Polisher

The Polisher

As everything changes overnight, I praise
the breaking of promises.

Whatever love wants,
it gets, not next year, now!

I swear by the one who never says tomorrow,
as the circle of the moon refuses to sell
installments of light. It gives all it has.

How do fables conclude, and who will explain them?
Every story is us. That's who we are,
from beginning to no-matter-how it ends.

Should I use the pronoun we?  The Friend
walks by, and bricks in the wall feel
conscious. Infertile women give birth.
So beauty embodies itself.

Those who know the taste of a meal
are those who sit at the table and eat.

Lover and Friend are one being,
and separate beings too,
as the polisher melts
in the mirror's face.

You See I Want a Lot, by Rainier Maria Rilke

You see, I want a lot.
Perhaps I want everything,
the darkness that comes with every infinite fall
and the shivering blaze of every step up.

So many live on and want nothing,
and are raised to the rank of prince
by the slippery ease of their light judgments.

But what you love to see are faces
that do work and feel thirst.

You love most of all those who need you
as they need a crowbar or a hoe.

You have not grown old, and it is not too late
to dive into your increasing depths
where life calmly gives out its own secret

Meditation Helps Homeless Kids

From Banyan Education = http://www.banyaneducation.com and its founder David Harshada Wagner and his wife Anu

Read below to learn about an upcoming Banyan humanitarian project and how you can help.

In Indian cities, there are massive numbers of children living and working on the streets. Some estimates put the number of homeless youth at 11 million. Many kids run away from home due to poverty and live on their own or in bands with other kids; others live with their families on the footpaths or in the railway stations. They work in sweatshops, often they are abused and victimized. Many kids become involved in prostitution or underworld gangs. Anyone who has visited an Indian city can tell you, street kids seem to be almost everywhere. Needless to say, their life is very difficult- and they are amazing kids. They are intelligent, resourceful, loving and beautiful.

There are many initiatives in India aimed at coping with the problem of child homelessness; one great organization working with the situation is the Salaam Baalak Trust. SBT, based in Delhi and Mumbai, focuses on rescuing kids from the street, housing them, reuniting them with their families (when appropriate) and providing them with a variety of types of education. You may remember the film Salaam Bombay by Mira Nair.  Mira founded SBT after the great success of the movie.

In September, while Harshada is in New Delhi India conducting Banyan meditation workshops for Life Positive Magazine, he will also be offering a series of workshops with the staff and children of Salaam Baalak Trust. With the kids, he will be doing a version of his Inner Life / Inner Health / Inner Wealth workshop- teaching meditation as a source of unconditional inner strength and inner guidance. With the staff, he will do a similar adult version of the workshop to help them to perform their very important work from place of balanced inner strength.

Many Banyan Friends and clients have expressed a wish to participate in our humanitarian projects. If you would like to participate in this program, please take part in our fund raising efforts. We had great success for our Sri Lanka Project back in January. We have decided to keep the costs down this time and not hold a fundraising event. Instead, we are sending this email to people who we think would like to be a part of the project.

Harshada and his local team in Delhi have a limited amount of expenses to cover including accommodations, local transportation, and workshop materials. Any donated monies leftover will be given directly to Salaam Baalak. Anything, however small, will be immensely helpful and will connect you with our team as we conduct these unique events.

Donation checks can be made out to Banyan Education and sent to 1391 Madison Ave Suite 1B New York NY 10029. We will host a donor gathering some time in October where we will show photos and report about the event. Please tell your friends. If you like, you can direct them to the Banyan website for more info.

Thanks so much for your participation and donation!
You can learn more about Salaam Baalak Trust on their website

If you have questions about the project or would like to offer suggestions, feel free to email us directly.

With Great Love and gratitude,

Article: Yoga Eases Low-Grade Back Pain

Yoga Eases Low-Grade Back Pain

December 20, 2005 08:41:13 PM PST
By Janice Billingsley
HealthDay Reporter

TUESDAY, Dec. 20 (HealthDay News) -- The next time your balky back acts up, maybe you should give the Warrior a try. Or the Cobra. Or perhaps the Supine Butterfly.

A new study of 101 adults with chronic lower back pain compared the benefits of yoga, conventional therapeutic exercise, and the information contained in a popular back pain book. The result: Those who took weekly yoga classes for 12 weeks experienced the most increase in function and the biggest decrease in the need for pain medication.

"The study suggests that for people who are looking to do something for themselves, you could clearly say that yoga is the best," said Karen Sherman, an epidemiologist and researcher with Group Health Cooperative in Seattle, and the lead author of the study.

The results of the study, which was sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, appear in the Dec. 20 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine.

For the study, Sherman and her colleagues chose participants between 20 and 64 years of age who suffered from chronic but not serious back pain -- people who "see their primary care doctor because their back is bothering them, and they're not feeling good," she said.

The researchers divided the participants, mostly women in their 40s, into three groups. One group took classes in viniyoga, a therapeutically oriented style of yoga that's relatively easy to learn and also emphasizes safety. The second group attended specifically designed therapeutic exercise classes taught by a physical therapist, which included strength and stretching exercises. The third group was given a copy of The Back Pain Helpbook and asked to read it.

The participants were interviewed four times during the 26-week study, including prior to the start the study and a follow-up at 26 weeks, to assess their ability to do daily tasks, pain level and how much pain medication they took.

All three groups reported improved function. But those who took the yoga class experienced the most improvement, with 78 percent of the group improving by at least two points on a standardized measure called the Roland Disability Scale, which assesses how people can perform daily tasks, such as walking up stairs without pain or bending over to tie shoelaces. Sixty-three percent who took the exercise class reported at least a two-point improvement, while 47 percent of those who read the book reported a similar benefit, Sherman said.

The yoga participants also reduced their use of pain medicine more than those in the other two groups. By the end of the 26 weeks, only 21 percent in the yoga class were taking medication for their back pain; 58 percent had been doing so before starting the yoga class. The use of pain medicine for the exercise group dropped to 50 percent from 57 percent, while those who read the book increased their use of pain medication -- from 50 percent to 59 percent, the researchers said.

Sherman said yoga may be more effective in helping with back pain because many people are unaware how they move their bodies. And the breathing that is a component of yoga makes people more conscious of their bodies and of ways they move that might contribute to their back problems, she said.

Sherman said this is the largest study done so far comparing different therapies for chronic, low back pain. But larger studies would be helpful in further teasing out the benefits of yoga compared to other forms of exercise or reading a self-help book.

She also emphasized that it's important to choose the right yoga instructor if you're struggling with back pain.

Dr. Andrew Sherman, head of medical rehabilitation at the Spine Institute at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, said that while yoga was shown in this study to be helpful, the best rehabilitation is tailored to each patient. Someone under stress and with tight muscles might be a good candidate for yoga, but another person with back pain who has very weak muscles might do better with a strength-building exercise program, he said.

Because there were only about 35 people in each group in this study, a larger study is needed before yoga can be shown to be definitively better than other therapies, he said.

"You can't throw other therapies under the bus based on 35 patients," Sherman said.

Kate Lorig, one of the co-authors of The Back Pain Helpbook and the director of the Stanford Patient Education Research Center, said she wasn't surprised by the study's findings.

"We have long known that in most cases giving people information alone is not enough to change either health behaviors or health status," she said. "I would never expect a book alone to make much difference."

She also agreed that the best way to achieve the desired results is with a good yoga instructor.

"My real question is if the findings from this study can be replicated with other instructors," Lorig said.

Darshan with Amma

Yesterday, I received a hug from Ammachi - the hugging saint of India - the wonderful living embodiment of divine love in the form of a human being.  In Sanskrit "darshan" means to "have an audience with" or "be in the presence of" an enlightened being or a Guru.

I asked for a mantra and received a beautiful one: "Ma Ma Ma Ma Ma Ma"

Mother, Earth mother, Mother of the Universe - so wonderful, as before I received my hug from Amma - the musicians were chanting to Durga - the warrior Goddess and Jaya Jagatambe - Hail to the Mother and I thought that I wanted my mantra to be something about the Mother.  And SVAHA, there it was whispered deep into my heart.  It literally felt like a wonderful arrow that pierced some heaviness in the heart when she hugged me and gave me the mantra.

I cannot recommend an experience like this enough.  It always restores my faith in humanity and LOVE for this life.

Always - at events like this - you hear the commentary and the doubts about that wonderful "G" word - actually there are two "G" words that seem to get everyone on some level in this YOGA practice - from wincing to complete embrace to downright rejection - "GOD" and "GURU."

Well - fundamentally, words are useless unless you understand from the depth of KNOWING, gnosis, jnana, what the words truly mean to every single cell in your body.  And what I've seen causes the greatest suffering over and over again around the words "God" and "Guru" is that most people see these concepts and the definition of the words as BEINGS outside themselves.  They see "God" and "Guru" as outer forms (people, saints, leaders, actors, celebrities, teachers) that they must subjugate themselves to in order to find the highest bliss and the highest freedom.   That by putting themselves in positions of "being less than" - that perhaps these people will give them "higher consciousness."  It's almost preposterous when written out, but this is exactly the kind of behavior I see over and over again around saints, leaders, actors, celebrities, teachers - and then I hear the complaint: "Why do I still feel lousy about myself?  What makes that person so great?  They didn't do anything to improve my life."

I believe seeing "God" and "Guru" as people outside one's self - causes such extreme damage to self-esteem.  Without self-esteem, a human being is like a hungry ghost - waiting to devour anything that will make him or her feel like "SOMETHING" or "SOMEONE" on this planet.

The Gurus with whom I study - and when I say "guru" I truly mean = those who help remove my fears and bring me a higher level of consciousness - all do ONE thing in common - they help me see the light of the divine in my own heart.  In other words:

They help me to see God's light in my own heart.

They help me to see that God equals consciousness

and my having consciousness of the Absolute in my heart is the ultimate YOGA or Union.  The differentiated particle of consciouness that I "think" I AM - merges with the Absolute that I AM.

And ultimately - the Gurus - with whom I study and keep company (some are Catholic, Buddhist, Yogis, saints from every faith, from every "religion") - say to me - hey, Kristina, don't forget, don't forget - there are infinite oceans of bliss -consciousness inside of you, drop into the SELF and expand the light of awareness within.  Then the whole world around you will change into that Garden of Paradise that blazes in your own heart.

May you realize the light of awareness within your own hearts.  May you have the blessings of the Gurus and God in your life!

Om shantih!

Yoga for High Heels

On July 4th weekend I was in South Dakota at my friend Bridget's wedding - which was sublime -but there was a lot of high heel wearing going on for this wee yogini.  And of course, it doesn't help me that everyone else wears heels - so my height is still equivalent to everyone else's.  I've found that in LIFE, no matter how often I wear cute flats, sneakers and am barefoot (my favorite!) - there are still plenty of wonderful occasions to wear them evil heels.  Heels - a la Sarah Jessica Parker - 3 inches or higher - 6 inches.  Stilettos, pumps, heels.  High heels.

But as my rolfer, and all of my many back healers and yoga teachers and my own studies of yoga has shown - heels can KILL the feet - and kill the energetics of the body if worn a little too often.

So what is the solution - as you don't want to be the person at the uber-fashionable wedding in your gorgeous gown and your Birkenstocks?  There are many.

What I have found as my all-time favorite- is the LEGS up the WALL pose.  After the wedding, photos and reception - what is that?  Like 4-8 hours in heels?!? ooh la la - with dancing and the like - go to your hotel room, take everything off and lift your legs up against the wall.

Flex and point the toes.

Circle the ankles.

Feel the blood, lymph and energy flow down.

Make sure to massage the 4th toes and the pinky toes - these toes take a beating in heels and are so important for leg comfort.

Bend your knees and squeeze each heel.

Massage the soles of your feet.

Make sure to spend a lot of time barefoot the next day!

Water by Deepa Mehta

I highly recommend watching the movie Water by Deepa Mehta.

It's incredible how far we have come as women in the world.  The movie truly underscores some of the wondrous things that Gandhi has done - liberating widows by legalizing their right to marry, for instance.  It's pretty astonishing to realize that at one point it was "illegal" for widows to re-marry after their husbands pass away - and that yes, even now, in India, millions of widows still suffer a similar fate.

Regular Exercise for the Body

This is from Rob Brezsny - it rings so true:

Of all the arguments made in favor of getting regular
exercise, I rarely hear the one that's most important
to me:

Do it because it strengthens and tones the power of
your will.  When you get used to rousing yourself out
of physical inertia, the habit carries over into the
mental and spiritual spheres.  You find it easier to
force yourself out of your comfort zones and push
toward the next frontier.  You're less likely to
procrastinate and accepty mediocrity and you actually
enjoy challenging yourself with worthy goals that
require strenuous effort.

Don’t sit with indifferent people, whose breath

Not these visible forms, your work is deeper.

Nine Requisites for Contented Living

WEEKLY WORDS OF WISDOM
on the World Wide Web
chosen by Lama Surya Das

* * * * * * * * *

Johann von Goethe said that there were nine requisites for contented living:

Health enough to make work a pleasure. Wealth enough to support our needs. Strength to battle with difficulties and overcome them. Grace enough to confess your sins and forsake them. Patience enough to toil until some good is accomplished. Charity enough to see some good in your neighbor.

Love enough to move you to be useful and helpful to others. Faith enough to make real the things of God. Hope enough to remove all anxious fears of the future.

Amma is Hugging NYC

http://www.amma.org/tours/amma-tours/new-york.html

Amma is a wonderful divine presence.  A beautiful radiance of love.  It's truly a blessing to be with her and get a hug - or even just be in her presence as she hugs person after person.  There is nothing like it!  Everyone needs a hug or twenty.  I survived on hugs from my father - he used to call them "yakapsules" - which is a blend of "hug" in my native tongue of Tagalog and "capsule."  Hug pills.  Hugs are such a panacea.  And from Amma - you get an otherworldy cosmic hug.
